The Understorey is a boutique design practice run by Katie Hepper. She loves to explore the vast and varied terrains of the wild Tasmanian landscape, and a strong sense of place informs and inspires her work. An organic influence is evident in her detailed and hand drawn designs, where the environment is both a source of direct material, as well as motivating her sustainable ‘from scratch’ approach.
After finishing top of her class in Visual Communications at UTAS, Katie dipped her toes into the advertising world for several years, and built up a strong suite of skills and experience. She also completed Australia’s renowned creative course, Award School, and was awarded runner up in the state.
In between travels and adventures around the world, Katie embarked on successfully establishing her own freelance business. Here she attracted numerous clients with her distinctive illustration and lettering design, which has been recognised with awards from the state’s PICA, TADA and DIEMEN awards.
From this business, The Understorey has evolved into a space for creative freedom, interacting with clients face to face, developing ideas which extend beyond the brief, and collaborating with the client throughout the design development.
If she could, Katie would set up her desk and computer in the remote South-West of Tasmania…
However she is also happily available to meet in the city, have a cup of tea, and discuss how she can help/collaborate/create with you.
