“With the utmost love and attention the man who walks must study and observe every smallest living thing, be it a child, a dog, a fly, a butterfly, a sparrow, a worm, a flower, a man, a house, a tree, a hedge, a snail, a mouse, a cloud, a hill, a leaf…’ – Robert Walser
The Understorey is the work of a walker, who finds pleasure in small and often overlooked details, (a seedpod, native blossom, or abalone shell) and draws on her ‘utmost love and attention’ of the environment to inform and build a design practice. The Understorey name reflects a multi-layered design process, which builds up from the roots to develop work of creative integrity and quality. Inspired by tiny details, The Understorey blossoms from these quiet beginnings into a complete and resolved design.
Each project is a new exploration, which allows fresh paths to be trodden, and new shoots to take root. The designer, Katie, embraces the process of transformation, from the unfurling of the initial idea through to the final resolved project. This practice driven approach means each design is embedded with references to its environment, and is an authentic expression of the places and people involved.
Katie is an adventurous designer. She loves to explore the vast and varied terrains of the wild Tasmanian landscape, and a strong sense of place informs and inspires her work. Intuitive, questioning and determined, Katie has nurtured her design prowess across a broad range of sectors from print and media publication through to brand management and identity. She has worked with some of Hobart’s most prolific creative agencies and has built up a strong suite of skills and experience.
Launching The Understorey in 2012, Katie sought to make her own mark on the local design landscape and has been successful with a number of campaigns and notable clients. Most recently she has been involved with illustrations for the Taste of Tasmania, created trail maps and infographics for the Clarence City Council and designed and illustrated interpretation signage for the heritage landing on the Gordon River.
If you have a business/project/idea close to your heart, Katie is happily available to have a cuppa to discuss and see how she can help/collaborate/create with you.
